PEARL HARBOUR ATTACK

RADIO LOCATOR WARNING. REWARD FOR OPERATOR. (Rec. 11.0.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 12. The United States Under-Secretary, Mr Patterson, has presented the Distinguished Service Medal to Staff Sergeant Joseph Lockard. Lockard had gained permission to practise the operation of radio locator services in Honolulu, and he was so working when he detected the approach of the large flight of hostile ’planes on December 7. He twice informed his superior officer, but his warning was twice disregarded. Finally, the Lieutenant told him: “Turn the thing off!” Within an hour the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour occurred.
