On Monday night, the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held one of their popular dances. During the evening, Miss Doris Willis rendered a' violin solo. The “Lucky Spot” was won by Mr. T. Guy and Miss J. Quate, and the “Monte Carlo” by Mr. G. Lee and Miss N. Burgess. A dainty supper was served by members of the Auxiliary. Privates J. Critchley and N. W. Kennedy, are spending leave with them parents. Miss Marie Strang, is on a' holiday visit to Runanga. The monthly meeting of the Runanga School Committee was held in the school on Monday night. Mr. R. Armstrong (Chairman), presided, and there were also present: Mrs. W. Wright, Messrs E. J. Ewan, W. Duggan, F. Oakley, C. Kennedy, W. Pattison, and Mr. P. Heath (Headmaster). The Headmaster reported as follows: Roll: 246 first week, 248 last week. The number of admissions has. so far not counter-balanced the number of withdrawals. The average is 230. Miss E. S'chwebe and Miss E. Teasdale, have replaced Mrs. Francis and Miss White. A supply of books has been received from the local library. Traces of borer are to be seen in the staff room. For the clinic, window curtains are required. The present ones seem unfit for further washing. Regarding the ground, may payment be made to the boys who mowed during the holidays? I shall be glad to have the committee’s opinion re trenches or a parapet along north fence line, also re use of ditch in Duncan Street. The Education Board wrote stating that they could not supply a special bus owing to the small number of children travelling from the Camp. It was reported that the school had been admitted to the Country Library, and that 205 books would be nlaced at its disposal early in the summer term. The fee of £5 5s is due in April. It was reported that Mr. G. Henderson had been granted leave of absence for military service and Miss E. Teasdale had been appointed in his stead. The question of insuring the school fittings against war risk was left to the Secretary to decide. With regard to the air-raid shelters it was decided to take no action meanwhile. The Secretary reported that he had received £5 for the swimming baths boiler. Applications were received for the position of caretaker, maae necessary by the resignation of Mrs. A. Campbell, and Mrs. W. Hodgson was appointed caretaker. It was left to the Secretary to reimburse the boys who mowed during the holidays. It was moved that new curtains be obtained for the Dental Clinic. The Education Board, having written stating that school grounds would be top-dressed during Christmas holidays, the Secretary stated he had written to the Board reporting that it had not been done. The Public Works Department wrote stating they could not subsidise two men'to attend to work on school grounds.
