BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) The tar-sealing of the main thoroughiare through Blackball has been completed. The distance cover-ed-is 90 chains, extending from the top of Blackball Hili, at the Cemetery, to the Mine Office. Nearly ail the business premises m the town, and the Miners’ Hall, have been sealed right up 'to th e pavement, thus cutting out the dust nuisance. Regarding the reconditioning of the pavement from the Presbyterian Church to the end of the business section, tins has been brought under the notice .of the Mines’ Department by the Grey County Engineer, Mr j. Higgins, and has been referred to the Mining officials for a report. There L therefore every likelihood of tins matter being also attended before the winter sets in. Mr A. McLagan, Miners’ National Secretary, was a visitor on Monday, having been sent for by .Roa Miners’ Union, to investigate a dispute at that colliery over tonnage and yardage rates. Mr McLagan, accompanied by the Management and Union officials, made an inspection of the place in dispute, later inspecting all' the mine .workings. During the afternoon the matters in dispute were discussed in the Company office, when a satisfactory settlement was reached. Mr McLagan returned to Christchurch by Monday evening’s rail-car.

His friends will be pleased to hear that the - condition of Mr Dan McVicar, at present an inmate of Grey Hospital, shows much improvement. Miss Annie Brown, accompanied by her brother, Alex, left on their return to Timaru last Saturday. Miss Anderson, of Timaru. who has been visiting her friends, Constable and Mrs Walden, has left on her return. i Mrs Carslaw, of Wellington, and her daughter, Anna, who have been visiting Mrs C. N. Cochrane, Stafford Street, have left on their return. Driver R. M. Clark, who has been visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs Richard Clark, Stafford Street, has returned to camp. The condition of Mr J. Gilmer, Clifford Street, who is an inmate of Grey Elospital, shows definite signs of improvement. Miss N. Clark, Main Road, is at present on holiday in Christchurch. Constable and Mrs Keown and family left on Tuesday for Cobden, where they will in future reside. Quite a number of men from various military camps arrived in town over the week-end, including Privates R. McDonald, F. Meadowcroft, G. Jamieson, A. King and J. McDonald. All look bronzed and healthy. Driver L. Neilson, who has been home on a visit to his family, has returned to camp.

. Private Glynn Jones is yisiting his mother. Mrs Jones, Faversham Paparoa. Miss Jessie Cochrane and Miss Anna Carslaw, Blackball, were visitors to Mrs W. Lowe, Te Kinga, last week-end.

Mr Bert Walker. Hart Street, sustained a broken wrist in Roa mine some time ago. He is fast recovering from the injury.
