ATTACK ON CALIFORNIA

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24. ■ At a conference with presmen, President Roosevelt described the shelling of the Californian oil refinery last night by a Japanese submarine during his radio speech, as “an excellent, example of political warfare.” He suggested, however, that it might react in a wa v opposite to that intended. SEARCH FOR THE SUBMARINE. NOT MUCH DAMAGE. (Rec. 9.10). WASHINGTON, Feb. 24. The U.S. Navy, in a communique. Stated that aircraft and surface vessels are now searching for the Japanese submarine which on Monday night shelled the B’anklin e Oil Renery in California. It fired twentyfive rounds of five-inch shells. There was only slight damage. There were no casualties.
