SELECTIVE CALL-UP Negroes Defend New York [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.l NEW YORK, Dec. 18. Mr La Guardia announced that 3000 coloured troops arrived in New York to-day. At the express order of Mr Roosevelt, they will guard tne city’s vital defence points, including the waterfront supply locations _ Mr La Guardia added that this is part of a large defence scheme to protect the entire country, planned long ago. Mr Stimson announced that the Army is suspending all voluntary enlistments as soon as the present rush subsides. In future it will get all tne manpower, including Air Force, by means of selective service. The “New York Times” publishes a full-page advertisement by Clarence Street’s Federal Union Incorporated, petitioning Mr Roosevelt to submit to Congress immediately, a programme for the union of the United States with Canada, Britain, Eire, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, based on the American constitution, in order to win the war and peace in the future. The signatories included the Secretary of the Interior (Mr Ickes) and the Supreme Court Justice Owen Roberts.
