SOLDIERS ON LEAVE
MR O’BRIEN’S REQUESTS. FOR RAIL AND OTHER CONCESSIONS. (Onr Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 8. The Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, has replied to the request o Mr J. O’Brien, Member for westland, that soldiers be given the rigi of free travel on the rail-car, als that there be an increase in the payment of subsistence to soldiers temoorarily out of camp, the repiy t 0 the effect that the policy of the Denartment is not to grant free ran travel to soldiers on leave, except for final leave period, but under the arrangements between the Army ana Rail wav Departments a concession of 33 1-3 ner cent, off ordinary fares is granted. This concession does not apoly to limited expresses or railMr Jones further advised that tne rate of subsistence. 2s 3d a day, applies to all members of the forces annointed since the outbreak of war, and, while the desirability of extending free travel on rail ana increasing allowances is quite anpreciated. there are other factors that enter into these questions, which must be dealt with as applying to the Army as a whole.
