TRADES COUNCIL REPORT

A well-attended meeting of the West Coast Trades and Labour Council was held on September 27. Among the large amount of business done was the following:—

Arising from a letter received from the Hon. F. Jones it wa's resolved to write to the Minister re-

questing that when a man has been examined for military service and rejected he be informed the nature of his disabilities.

It was decided to ask the Government to extend daylight saving to one hour as we believe such would be appreciated by the workers—particularly underground workers.

It was agreed that copies of the speeches of Mr. Sid Jordan, the news commentator of the Trade Union Station 2KY, Sydney, be procured for use of the Magazine Page Editor: al Board.

The National Councillor submitted his report of the recent meeting ot the National Council of the Federation of Labor Considerable discussion took place concerning the criticism of the work of the West Coast Trades Council, and its Magazine Page, by the Leaders of the Federation. The Council final!}' decided that it’s activities on behalf of the Railway workers a’t Brunner were well covered by the Federation constitution, and the past policy of the Editorial Board of the Magazine Page was endorsed.

The six-monthly re-election of the Editorial Board will take place next meeting.

The report of the “Stabilisation ot Wages and Prices” Committee, endorsed by the National Council, was rejected by the Trades Council, and the following amendment carried:—

“That prices be stabilised first and that the wages question still be the subject of negotiation and increase until a complete schedule of prices be established, and then the relationship of wages and prices be considered as they effect the standard of jiving,”
