N.Z. ROAD ACCIDENTS
BIG DECREASE IN BLACK-OUT. P.A. WELLINGTON, October 7. “During the past two months New Zealand has established a very creditable record in accident prevention,” said the Minister of Transport, Pion. R. Semple, in a statement issued tonight. He added that in eight weeks there was not a single fatal accident to pedestrians or cyclists in the restricted lighting areas, and only last Friday night was this record broken. iThe Minister added that, as a result lof this exuerience, it Ind been decided, in the meantime, to withhold ; the proposed further limitation of motor vehicle speeds in restricted areas. The Road Safety Council, at its July meeting, passed a resolution recommending that speeds be reduced to 25 miles an hour in the blacklout areas, where a speed limit of 30 1 miles prevailed, and to 30 miles an hour in the rest of these areas, in ' view of the position, however, it was not thought necessary to imnose fresh speed limits, but the Minister added that caution must not be relaxed.
