NEW 1.Z.B.

PA. AUCKLAND, October 6. Handsome in design, lavishly furnished and equipped according to the most modern needs of radio, the National Commercial Broadcasting Service’s new IZB studios in Durham Street were officially opened to-night by the Minister in Charge of Broadcasting (Hon. D. Wilson). The ceremony was held in the concert room of the “radio theatre,” and preceded a special variety programme broadcast from the station. The Controller of Commercial Broadcasting, Mr C. G. Scrimgeour, presided, and there were many guests. “There was some criticism, mainlv through ignorance, I think, when the Government decided to continue with the erection of this building, so 1 would like to make the position absolutely clear.” Mr Wilson said. “The proposal was approved before the war started, and the reason why this project was not postponed, as was the national broadcasting headquarters I building in Wellington, was because lof the unhealthy conditions under 'which the IZB staff had to work, and ,the urgent need for providing accommodation for other Government departments in Auckland,”
