A motorist coming last night from Runanga to Greymouth was mystified shortly after 11 o’clock by the sight of a series of small oil fires on the road on the Grevmouth side of the Camp station. The fires extended over a distance of about a chain, and when the motorist pulled up to examine them, they all flickered out. An examination afforded no explanation, beyond the fact that the oil, apparently of a heavy variety, had been afire in small quantities for the distance mentioned.

The monthly meeting of the Ngahere W.1., was held in the Ngahere hall, Mrs P. Donaldson presiding. After the usual routine business, it was decided t 0 hold the annual ball on November 1. The monthly competition was won by Mrs Nyberg, Mrs Steehan 2nd., and Mrs Richardson H.C. The competition for next month is to be a sweet (Hoki-Poki). Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Ware and Mrs Davis. The motto is: “Happiness is a Perfume, You Cannot Pour it on Others Without Getting- a Few Drops on Yourself.”

The first sitting of the newly appointed No. 5 Armed Forces Appeal Board will be held at Greymouth to-day. The members Messrs W. Meldrum, A. j. Panther and G. Manson will assemble this morning and Committee business will be transacted. In the afternoon, the new Board Will hold its first public sitting, to deal with appeals by or on behalf of men called in the Nintn Ballot. Futher sittings will be held at Hokitika on Thursday, at Reefton on Friday and at Westport on Monday and Tuesday next. Mr. C. F. tthapcott, of Greymouth, has been appointed secretary to the new .Board.
