BOWLING

The official opening of the Cobden Bowling Club was held on Saturday afternoon. The President, Mr W. Jackson, extended a welcome to the visitors, and declared the green open. The first jack was thrown by Mrs W. Glen, daughter of the President, and the first bowl played by Mrs C. K. Millar, wife of the VicePresident. Play during the afternoon resulted as follows: —L. Smitn, Millar, Pattinson, W. Hughes (s.) 20, McKenzie, Pope, McKechnie, Sligo (s.) 16; Girvan, Spedding, Lamberton, Curry (s.) 20, Eggelton, Wicks, Lyall, Tabb (s.) 18; King, Kells, Pearson. Garforth (s.) 21, Hetherington, Robb, Eastwood, Harrison (s.) 19; Anderson, Boddy, T. King, Barnes (s.) 23, Haglund, Rosewall, Gilmour, Robertson (s.) 19; McDonald, Clelland, Gunn, White (s.) 25, J. Hughes, Bruerton, Jackson, Bunt (s.) 21. In a singles game, A. J. Duncan defeated J. A. Moore. 33/31. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies. At the conclusion of play, thanks and good wishes were tendered by Messrs Bunt (Karoro), Robertson (Greymouth), Barnes (Runanga), and Eastwood (Opawa). There were present at a committee meeting of the Karoro Bowling Cluo Messrs J'. M. Bunt (chairman) G. Gilbert, G. Absalom, S. Peek, G Batty, W. Hughes, E. Cox, and JSaunders (secretary). / The question of women members was discussed, when it was reported that 41 members had voted on the proposal, the vote being 28 in favour and 13 against. Subsequent to the taking of a postal ballot, members (were communicated with as to their wives becoming members of the women’s section of the club, and so far 10 replies have been received. One new members, Mr. C. R. Garard was elected. The resignations of Messrs R. W. Sanson and E. R. Moss were accepted with regret. The opening day of the club was fixed tor Saturday, November 1.
