AS A WORKER SEES IT
(By "Roadman”) According to latest reports from the Eastern Front, it seems that the war brew which Hitler has .been cooking for years, and which a lot of others outside / Germany have been poking their spoons into and giving a stir, has boiled over pretty fiercely and is beginning to splash back on Hitler’s hocks.
Those weak,* demoralised, ill-equip-ped Russian armies that we heard so much about for so many years seem to be staggering along in truly jniraculous fashion, and even driving Adolf back in the direction of Germany in some places. Doesn’t it beat everything!
And that reminds us. W$ haven’t heard a great deal lately from the gentry who told us all along that Hitler and Stalin were cobbers, and that everything they did was part of a prearranged plan to dominate the world between them. We’ve waited pretty patiently, but the weeks are slipping by, and they haven’t yet told us how they fit this latest development into their theory.
Perhaps it came about this way
You see, the Nazis and the Soviet have been hand in glove right through the piece. Old Molotov went to Berlin recently, and he and Ribbentrop had quite a yarn about everything. I know, because my wife’s uncle has a friend who knew a man that was there at the time.
“Now,” says Molotov, “first of all we’ll sign a pact of non-aggression and you will go to war against Britain. You will nip into Poland and grab the lot of it. Then the Christchurch “Press” will come out and say that we have betrayed the Polish people. After that we’ll hop in and take tjie most of Poland off you again, thus ruining the circulation of the “Press.”
“Boy, that’s an idea,” says Ribbentrop. “You guys sure do get some brainwaves.”
“But hold on,” says Molotov. “After that vou blokes will nin into Britain for all you’re worth, and the New Zealand “Herald” will write long articles about how we are sitting on the fence and how there is a secret treaty between you and us, and all sorts of things like that.
“And then, just 'when the New Zealand “Herald” is saying that we’re going to come into the war on your side, you’ll attack us, and knock all their ideas rotten.”
“Gosh, I am pleased I met you fellows,” chuckles Ribbentrop. “Hitler and the boys would never have thought of that. But where do we get to after that?”
“Well, Rib, old bean, we tear into it for a few months and slaughter each other in millions; and then the German, Austrian and French workers get sick of it and revolt. Then we march in to help them and put all you guys where you belong. Thus we upset another theory of the capitalist press that the Communists are allies of the Nazis. Get the idea?” “Sure I do. Boy, oh boy, this is our big chance, and I’m pleased you thought of it. This is going to be a scream.” So you see, readers, how they’ve got it all worked out. Capitalist dailies please copy.
