HOKITIKA NOTES

[Cur own HOKITIKA. July 20. Personal: Mr. W. Dunean, a lormer well known resident, who has been living in Wellington for the past few years, returned last evening, and remains in Hokitika lor some time. Mr. J. H. Hardy, ornamental gardener to the Hospital Board for some years, has resigned for health reasons. The Board received his resignation with regret, the members paying a tribute to Mr. Hardy for the special attention he had given to his work, the Secretary being instructed to forward him a letter conveying the Board’s appreciation of his services, also the wish that he would enjoy improved health in the North Island. Woodstock Hall was the scene of a gay gathering on Friday evening, when the residents turned out in force to welcome home Private Berny McCormack, of Rimu. The hall was decorated with streamers and greenery. Community singing was held, and many local artists gave items. Mr. W. J’. Corsan, on behalf of the residents, asked Private McCormack to accept a cheque as a token of esteem from the people. Opportunity was taken to extend a welcome to Private Ken Wallace, of Hokitika, who was also present. Private McCormack expressed his thanks to the people for the gift, and their kind words of welcome on his return.

Full day parade for Territorials and Home Guard: There was a full day parade to-day along with the Territorials and many country members were present. In command of Captain P. H. Blank, the units in the morning scattered through the town near the river bridge leading to the aerodrome, and later marched over to the aerodrome where field drill and exercises were carried out. me men took their lunch with them, and had a most enjoyable day. The members of the E.P.S. also attended. Accident: While engaged shoeing a horse at the shop of Mr. C. G. West. Mr. C. Cox received a kick on tiie right thigh, suffering torn muscles and fracture of a bone. He was taken to the hospital, where the injuries were X-rayed, but he was later able to return to his home, though it will be some time before he is able, to resume his duties. Women's institutes: Mrs. W. Gunn, at the meeting of the Wataroa branch of the Women’s Institute, presided over a large attendance. Competition results were: Sugar bag cushion worked in flowers: Miss A. Friend Ist. Mrs. W. Adamson 2nd. The following parcels were handed in to be forwarded to the Patriotic Committee in Hokitika: Mrs. Routhan, 4 pairs of mittens; Mrs. R. Cooper, one balaclava; Mrs. Giles, one pullover. Mrs. Birss presided at the meeting of the Kokatahi Women’s Institute over a fair attendance. An invitation to be present at the Arahura Institute's birthday was accepted. The roll call (“Uses of Methylated Spirits”), was well responded to. Competition results were: Date scones: Mrs. Monk 1, Mrs. Wrobleski 2. Kettle holder: Mrs. Monk 1, Mrs. O. Reilly 2. Blooms: Mrs. Kelly 1, Mrs. Wrobleski 2. Ball: The nurses of the Westland Hospital have been busy during the past few days with arrangements for a ball, to be held here on Wednesday evening to assist nurses overseas, and specially those who lost their belongings during the evacuation of Crete and Greece.

Ross Borough Council: Mr. K. O. May (Mayor), presided at the meeting of the Ross Borough Council on Friday evening, the following also being present: Crs. P. J. Minehan. A. Phillips, J. Holmes, B. Gough, and F. Fletcher. Westland County Council forwarded ‘£l69 17s heavy traffic fees for the period. The Audit Office notified approval of purchase of

timber from Stuart and Chapman, of Ross, up to a sum of £5O, provided timber could not be purchased cheaper at any other mill. The Council agreed to carry out repairs to bell tower and reel sheds, and to make a grant of £lO to the Fire Brigade. The Health Inspector notified .10 visits, and enclosed a copy of an order issued for repairs to a' residence. Mr. A'. Phillips gave notice of moving at next meeting to have rescinded a motion authorising the prosecution of all owners of wandering stock. It was arranged for the Home Guard to have the use of the school hall for the night practices The Council carried the Mayor’s resolution to have funds raised for patriotic purposes by taxation. The Mayor said the resolution had been unanimously supported at ’the recent meeting of the West Coast Provincial Patriotic Council. It was agreed to have 1,000 copies printed and forwarded to patriotic and local bodies.
