Mr W. F. Tracy left last evening on return to Christchurch. Mrs. M. E. Lewis, Marsden Roa’d, left last evening, for Christchurch. Messrs F. F. Reid (chairman). A. H. McKane, G. M. Hall and W Baxter (secretary) of the Armed Forces Appeal Board left last evening on return to Christchurch. Mr. Geoffrey Dawson, will retire from the editorship of “The Times. ’ in September, and will be succeeded by Mr. Robert Barrington Ward, stated a London cablegram. The wedding was celebrated at St. Barnabas’s Church', Auckland, recently, of Mr. Donald Grant, formerly of Camerons and Greymouth, and Miss Minola Burr, of San Francisco. An air casualty announcement stated last night:—The death of Flying Officer Patrick Wilmot Horton, R.A.F., who was reported missing in November, is officially presumed by the Air Ministry His next-of-kin is Captain W Horton, 333. The Terrace, Wellington (father). —Press Assn. The funeral of Mr. Moss Bradshaw,, took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday morning, being largely attended. Rev. Father Sarslield O'Brien, a nephew of deceased, celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick's Church, and Rev. Father A. C.' Gregory assisted, by Rev. Father O’Brein. conducted the service at the 'graveside. Mr. J. Adamson, manager of the Owen Bridge mine (Westport Coal Company). Denniston, has been appointed manager of the Liverpool State mine, and Mr. George Smith, formerly manager of the Wallsend mine, who wa's recently appointed manager at Liverpool, has been transferred to the position of local manager. Mr. Adamson received his J training at the Liverpool mine. Mr. Harry Hopkins, Supervisor of the Lease-Lend programme of American aid to Britain, arrived in London on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Hopkins, who made the journey from America in a bomber plane forming one of a fleet of bombers, all of which arrived safely, visited iRt. Hon. Winston Churchill immedilately on his arrival, and subsequently attended a meeting of the Cabinet. | Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist, M.P. for Eay of Plenty, served throughout the campaign in Crete and was safely evacuated on June 2. His experience in Crete, as related in letters. indicates that Lieutenant Hult- , quist was in the thick of the light:ing, and that his escape was providential. His brother, Ronald, was ■ wounded in the hip and was later posted as missing, the probability being that he was taken prisoner" with other New Zealand wounded whom jit was impossible to evacuate. I Corporal J. F. Scorgie, and Privates A. C. Vincent, R. Martin, W. > Walker and R. Grant, all of Cobden. who returned from service overseas recently, were guests of honour at a social and dance held in the Cobden Convent Hall on Thursday night, under the auspices of the Ccbden Soldiers’ Committee. Sister Baldocfc, who leaves shortly to join an oversea's nursing unit, was also honoured. Presenting the men with an envelope of notes, Mr. A. H. McKane extended to them the good wishes of Cobden people for their complete - recovery. He presented Sister Baldock with a similar gift, and extended to her good wishes for a ;dafe return.. The large qrowd present included many relatives of the guests, who were enthusiastically received when they returned thanks.
