HOKITIKA NOTES

[Qur Own Correspondent] Personal: HOKITIKA, May 22. Mr Hunter of Westport was a visitor here to-dtiy. Mrs Lewis of Hokitika, has received a cable from her son, intimating his safe return from Greece. The death took place at Gisborne last Sunday of a native of Hau Hau, Hokitika, in the person of Mrs Johanna Brodie. The late Mrs Brodie was a daughter of the late Mr Car- ■ son Moore, an early resident of Hau Hail, where the family resided for many years. Of late years she had been residing in the Bay of Plenty. She is survived by one son, resident in Sydney; and" by two married daughters, one living in France, and one at Napier. One son, Andrew, lost his life while serving in the Royal Air Force. , _ Shipping: Following a period of heavy weather and stormy conditions, shipping movements were resumed yesterday, when the Gael sailed at 7.45 a.m., for Jackson’s Bay. She returns on Monday to load timber for Wellington. The Hokitika arrived at eight o'clock last evening from Wellington, via Greymouth. • After discharge she loads timber for Wellington. White Heron: A white heron has made its appearance here. It was seen to alight on the roof of a house in Tancred Street. Some time later it made off again. Arahura Bridge: Mr Wilkins of Greymouth, contractor far the restoration of the bridge across the Arahura River to ■ give access to settlers on the north- ; ern sid,e of the river, and improve communication for the Arahura dredge, has made a start with the driving of the hardwood piles, and is making good headway. Croquet Club: At the annual meeting of the Croquet Club, the following officers were elected: —Captain, Mrs Veale; Vice-Captain, Mrs Andrews; Treasurer, Mr R. Paterson; Secretary, Mrs J. Preston; Committee, Mesdames G. Perry, W. MacFarlane, G. King, A. Benjamin and A. Parkhill. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The Club recorded appreciation. of the work of the auditor (Mrs Wilson), and the greenkeeper (Mr Williams). The Captain, ViceCaptain, Treasurer and Secretary entertained the members at afternoon tea. Air Force Band: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), presided. at a meeting of citizens last evening, to arrange a welcome for the Air Force Band, there being present: Messrs D. J. Evans, G. H. Chapman, A. H. Lawn, H. G. Park, A. R. Elcock, L. Ross, R. Paterson, A. Neil and E. W. Heenan; Mesdames G. A. Perry, F. Stuart, Christain and Shaw, and Misses Knight and Walker. It was arranged that when the Band arrives oir Monday evening, the Automobile Association will drive the members to their hotels, while the Municipal Band will welcome the visitors at the station. A welcome dance will be held in the Soldiers’ Hall the same evening, the music for which will be played by the Air Force Band. Messrs A. H. Lawn, A. Neil, L. Ross and E. W. Heenan being the committee in charge of the ball. And Mesdames Perry and Stuart of the buffet supper. On Tuesday at 9.30 a.m., the Band will be taken on a motor tour, visiting the dredges and Lake Kanieri, where morning tea will be provided. In the afternoon, there will be a ceremonial parade at Cass Square, to which school childfen will be invited, and business

people will be asked to close their premises to permit employees to be present. On Tuesday evening the Band gives a concert in the Princess Theatre. Patrons will be permitted to reserve seats, but the plan will not be opened until to-morrow evening. The Mayor, with Messrs D. J. Evans and A. H. Lawn were deputed to meet the Manager of the Band, Mr Brady, and complete details of the tour.

The Mayor paid a tribute to those who have offered to billet the members of the Band, the following offers having been received: —Hotel Westland 25; Red Lion Hotel 20; Hotel. Empire 3; Pioneer Hotel 4; Central Hotel 4.

It was agreed to ask the Lighting Controller .to relax the restrictions during the stay of the Band.
