What is believed to be the first instance in New Zealand of a sailor being president of a branch .of the Returned Soldiers’ Association has occurred in Ashburton. At the annual meeting of the Ashburton association Mr. W. G. -Welsh was elected president.’ Mr. Welsh served in the Merchant Marine during the' last war.
