CONTRACEPTIVES FREE OF DUTY. BABY FEEDING GOODS BARRED. WELLINGTON, March 13. The free importation of contraceptives, while articles required foil baby feeding were prohibited under import licenses, was the subject of a question by, Mr W. J. Polson (Opposition. Stratford) in the House of Representatives yesterday. He asked the Minister (Mr Nash): Whether he would tak e immediate steps, in the interest of the Dominion, to have the position reversed. Mr Polson asked whether Mr Nash would explain to the House why close on 400 varieties of contraceptives, preventives, and abortifacients are imported into New Zealand annually, paying no duty except salestax and ad valorem duty, and apparently without import restriction, while on the other hand Pyrex babyfeeding bottles were absolutely prohibited, and Plunket teats and Plunket syringes paid heavy duty and were unobtainable.
