DRASTIC CUTS
CONSUMPTION OF GOODS
Latest British War Measure
TPer Press Association! WELLINGTON, February 24. Referring to an announcement in the morning press relative to the policy of the British Government for the reduction of consumption, Hon. W. Nash stated to-day that the word “by” should in several cases be read “to.” With these corrections, the statement should read:— “Materials required for war purposes are to be withheld from the manufacturers, with the consequent curtailment of the supplies of finished goods for the consumers. For instance, the people will not be allowed any more aluminium pots or pans. Silk stockings and other knitted silk clothing; and other knitted apparel, have been reduced to half of the previous supplies. Pottery, glassware, linoleums and carpets have also been reduced to one-third. Mattressies containing metal springs or coils have been reduced to one quarter. All other mattresses are reduced to two-thirds. Toilet requisites, fancy household goods, sports goods, toys, and machinery plant have been reduced to one-quarter. Gloves have been reduced to onethird of the previous supplies. These do not represent the full schedule of the restrictions, but they indicate the trend.”
