HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own correspondent] At the meeting of the Hokitika School Committee last evening, Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairmans A. Leslie, J. Lawrence, W. E. Richards, J. Laing, Rev. Murray Feist were present. Apologies were presented, for the absence of Messrs BKing and L. Graham (secretary), and in the latter’s absence, Rev. Mr Feist acted as secretary. The chairman referred to the death of Mr R. J. Redder, a member of the committee for many years. He moved a vote of sympathy to the family. 'Phis' was seconded by Mr Richards and carried, the members standing m silence. Mr R. Wild (member of the Canterbury Education Board) who was present, referred to the proposed swimming pool and produceci a Plan of Waimairi pool. He stated the Board could not subsidise the amount the committee held. He recommended a smaller pool than that suggested. He congratulated the staff on th e good results of the recent examinations. The chairman thanked Mr Wild for attending and taking such a keen interest in school affairs and on the chairman’s motion a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Wild. It was resolved that the question of th e swimming pool be held over. Repairs and alterations as recommended by the electrical Inspector, were agreed upon, to be sent to the Board, also an account for repairs from storm damage. The In* spector’s report on the school examinations was considered satisfactory, and it wa s resolved to congratulate the Headmaster and staff. Aem-, -ms amount'ng to £5 7s were pax?d Wr payment. It was decided to hold over the matter of filling the vacancy on the committee till next meeting. It. was reported that th e range in Tne caretaker's residence was beyond use and it was resolved that the Board be asked to provide a new one. The Rector’s report showed a roll number at the Primary Department of 301. secondary 100. The examination results this year were good. Of the 13 matriculation candidates, seven passed. Ihe six pupils who sat for th P Public Service examination. passed. Nine of the 13 matriculation candidates gained the School Leaving Certificate, and two gained a narPa' pass.
