AUSTRALIA’S TEA SUPPLY
Home Growing Proposed QUEENSLAND SUITABLE (Received January 10, 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 9, Mr J. R. Vincent, a retired teaplanter, who is living in Sydney, has expressed the opinion that enough tea could be grown in North Queensland to satisfy the entire needs of Australia. Mr Vincent, who had many years of experience in tea growing at Travancore South-west India, declares that the conditions are ideal in North Queensland, where women and children could do the tea plucking.
Good Tea Grown BUT LABOUR NOT CHEAP ENOUGH. (Received January 9. 9.50 p.m.) BRISBANE. January 9. Commenting on the tea planting idea cabled earlier, the Queensland Minister of Agriculture said: “Teagrowing in Queensland would not be an economic possibility under the Australian industrial conditions.” Nevertheless,” he said, his Department experimentally had grown good tea.
