ACCIDENTS
MAN KILLED. CHRISTCHURCH, January 8. At Ngaio Downs, East Coast, Kaikoura, an accident occurred on Friday in which a married man, Albert Edward Banner was killed. Evidence at the inquest showed that Banner had been instructed to sledge sonje firewood. 'The sledge apparently overturned, pinning him underneath. The indications were that the horses had got out of control, as there were skid marks for several yards. When found, Banner was still holding the reins, and the horses were standing quietly. Hilton Messines Stretch, aged 23, was accidentally drowned in the Waimakariri river at Belfast on January 6, according to the finding of the Coroner (Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M.) given at the inquest yesterday. Francis Joseph Steere said that he went for a swim with Stretch and another man in the evening, and Stretch was the first to enter the water, while the witness and his friends were undressing. Within a few seconds he seemed to be getting out of his depth and was struggling. Sidney James Herbert, the third member of the party, said that although he was not a good swimmer he had tried to help Stretch, but could not get hold of him. Steere had said that he was not a good swimmer either. Constable J'. E. J. Anderson said that when he arrived, bystanders helped to recover the body and artificial respiration was applied without success. In giving the verdict, the Coroner commended Herbert for his attempt to save Stretch. Mrs. E. Sibley, 9 Rolleston Street, collapsed in a tram shelter in Cathedral square yesterday at 4.25 p.m.. and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Her condition is satisfactory.
