ARMOURED FORCE

AUSTRALIAN PROJECT Vehicles to be Locally Made [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] January 9, 1.2 a.m.) CANBERRA, January 8. Mr R. G. Menzies, Prime Minister, has announced a decision to form an Australian Armoured Corps, and also an Armoured Division for the A.I.F. In making the announcement, Mr Menzies said: “This project involves the expenditure of several million pounds of which a substantial proportion will be spent in Australia on the production of armoured lighting vehicles. Action is now being taken which will ensure that the required personnel will be raised, trained, and ready to receive the vehicles in progressive stages as the vehicles become available.’’ The whole project, Mr Menzies said, marked a most important advance in the mechanisation of the Australian Army. It would be carried out under British expert advice. The development of the project would be under the control of Major-General J. Northcott, Deputy-Chief of the General Staff.
