Mr. E. Cox leaves to-day for Christchurch. Mrs. J. A. Guy returned yesterday from Christchurch. Rev. Father E Larsen, S.M., left yesterday on return to Wanganui Mr J. Saunders left last evening for Christchurch. Miss G. Robinson left by last evening’s rail-car for Christchurch. Mrs W. D. Taylor left by last evening’s rail-car for Christchurch. Mr G. Withers leaves to-day on return to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. J. McDonald, Wanganui, are on a visit to Greymouth. Miss D. W. Blair returned yesterday from Wellington. Mr. J. Hayes returned by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Miss N. Sutherland was a passenger by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Misses D. Grace and G. Bailey, who have been visiting Greymouth, leave to-day on return to Dunedin. Captain E. R. Parke, 0.C., National Reserve, returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mr. Malvin Connolly returned yesterday after a holiday visit to Little River. Miss D. Brown left last evening for Christchurch after a holiday visit to Greymouth.

Miss J. Stevenson, of Hokitika, leaves this morning on a holiday visit to Auckland. The death of Henri Bergson, aged 81 years, the winner of the Nobe. prize for literature in 1917, is announced in a London cablegram. Miss D. Shearer and Mr. J. McGrath, Camerons, will leave by the express to-day on their return to Wellington. Mr A. Gunn, junr., of the staff of the “Timaru Herald,” is at present on a holiday visit, in company with Mrs Gunn, to his parents, Mr and Mrs A; Gunn, Cobden. Mesdames C. Russell and C. Crist, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Nelson, Herbert Street, leave to-day on return to Christchurch, accompanied by Miss V. Nelson.

The engagement is announced of Margaret Elizabeth (Mollie), only daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Eyeington, of Inangahua J'unction, and Garth Allan David, youngest son of Mr Thomas Southon, also of Inangahua. Passengers bj r yesterday s express to Christchurch included: Miss N. Kennedy, Miss D. The death occurred on Tuesday, after a lengthy illness, of Dr. Alrred Charles Sandston, a Christchurch surgeon and a member of the Christchurch City Council. pi. Sandston, who had a distinguished medical career, was born in Christchurch in 1876.

The death occurred at Nairobi, East Africa, of Lord Baden Powell, the Chief Scout and founder of the Boy Scout Movement. He was aged 83, and had been in ill health for some months past. The sixth son of Rev. Professor Baden Powell, of Oxford, he entered the Army in 1876 and served in Africa, Afghanistan and India, retiring in 1910, and being appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Hussars. He was made Major-General following the defence of Mafeking. He founded the Boy Scout and Girl Guide Movements in 1908, with the object of promoting good citizenship and international goodwill amongst youths. He wrote numerous books on Scouting and sport, and has also exhibited sculptures at the Roygl Academy. He visited New Zealand several times, the last occasion being about five years ago. He was Knighted in 1909 and raised to tne Peerage as first Baron in 1922. He held the following decorations: G.C.V.0., K.C.V.0., K.C.8., and was honoured by decorations of Portugal, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Chile and France. His heir is Arthur Robert Peter Baden Powell, born in 1913. His grandfather was Robert Stephenson, inventor of the steam engine.
