WAIUTA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent] Mr Jas Young who has been receiving medical treatment in Christchurch has returned home. Mr D. Shannahan a former wellknown resident, and now on the engineering staff of the U.S.S.' Coy., paid a brief visit to the township on Thursday. The following pupils of the Waiuta School have gained their proficiency certifiates: Betty Ward, Benita Hogg, Nita Read, Brian Smith. Terry Smith, Pat Lines, Anthony Devescovi, Ronald Mitchell, Jack Chapman and Colin Beasley. : | ~-i
At the weekly patriotic euchre the ladies’ prize was won by Mrs Larcombe, and Mr F. Thorn won the gent’s. The aggregate prizes went to Mrs Larcombe and Mr M. J. Mitchell. A competition was won by Mr J. Mitchell. The euchres will be carried on as usual during the holidays. Work ceased at the mine fqr the holidays on Friday, and will resume on Monday, January 6. Mr and Mrs G. S. McGallan have disposed of their interests in the Empire Hotel to Mr.J. Ryan (Rapahoe). The new proprietor takes possession on January 14. Mr and Mrs McGallan, during their stay here have been very popular, and their many friends wish them success in their new surroundings.
