Flewellen, Tetaho, leaves to-day for Christchurch on a holiday visit. Mr and Mrs R. Ford arrived yesterday from Auckland on a holiday visit to Greymouth. Rev. Father B. McDairmid, S.M., who was recently ordained, arrived yesterday on a visit to Greymouth. Mr. and Mrs. V. Griffiths, accompanied by Misses J. < J and N. Griffiths, leave by Monday’s express on a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs D. Geary and Mrs Rodgers, of Kumara, leave to-mor-row to spend the Xmas vacation in Auckland. Mr De Valera has entered a nursing home for observation and underwent a slight eye-operation, stated a Dublin cablegram. Mr and Mrs J. McDairmid returned yesterday from Greenmeadows where they attended the ordination of their son, Rev. Father B. McDanmid, S.M. Mr J. Robertson, M.P., yesterday announced his resignation of the position as secretary of the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors’ Association. Mr Robertson has been secretary for fourteen years. Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included Miss G. M. Ramsay (to Central Otago). Miss T. McDougall, Miss J. I. E. McNiven (to Wanganui), Mrs C. Davi s (to Nev.Plymouth). Miss J. G. Mr. T. D. Holmes, of the teaching staff cf the Greymouth Technical High School, who left yesterday to accept an appointment at Wellington College, was farewelled by pupils of the school and members of the staff on Wednesday morning. The head prefect R. Henderson, on behalf of the pupils, made a suitable presentation to Mr. Holmes, wishing him every success in h’ls new position. Mr. Holmes expressed his appreciation of the gift. On Tuesday morning, Miss M. McGlashan, on behalf of the pupils of Form IV, presented Mr. Holmes with a wallet. Other classes also made presentations to Mr. Holmes.
Mrs A. Wise, wh 0 has retired on superannuation from the teaching staff of the Grey Main School after a life-time’s association with the school as scholar and teacher, was farewelled at afternoon tea yesterday morning when she was honoured by the teachers,, pupils and parents. Mr J. W. Greenslade (chairman of the School Committee) presented Mrs Wise with an antique brass set, comprising log-box, fire screen and combination on behalf, of the parents and pupils, and in doing so referred to the great respect in which she was held by parents and pupils. She could leave the school in the knowledge that she had served the town ably and well over a long period of years. Mrs Wise, in reply, said that after being so long connected with the school she found it hard to leave. She expressed thanks for the gifts which would remind her of many happy years with the children. She was accorded musical honours by the pupils and a happy gathering concluded with a scramble for lollies supplied by Mrs Wise. On behalf of the teaching staff, the headmaster (Mr J. Graham) presented Mrs Wise with a set of cutlery, paying a tribute to her long and valued services in the cause of education.
