WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] High Tides: Wednesday, 4. —1.21 a.m.; 1.38 p.m. Thursday, 5.—2.06 a.m,; 2.2 - p.m. Friday, 6. —2.57 a-m.; 3.18 p.m. Saturday, 7—3.56 a.m.; 4.19 p.m. Shipping: WESTPORT, December 3. The Holmlea is due from New Plymouth to-morrow to load coal for Wanganui. The Nikau is due from Tarakohe to-morrow to load coal for Nelson. The Waipahi from Wellington on Wednesday is now cancelled. The Poolta is expected from Gisborne on Friday to load coal for Wellington. The Totara is due from Tokomaru Bay on Thursday to load coal for Gisborne.

The Wingatui is expected from Wellington on Saturday to load coal for return to Wellington. The Kakapo is expected from Lyttelton and Wellington with general cargo during the week, and loads coal on Monday for Auckland.

Personal: Mr Pat Brody, of the clerical staff of N.Z. Railway Workshops, has been transferred to the Otahuhu branch. Mrs J. Paul, Westport, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Clark, at Millerton. Mr L. Tredennick, president of the Westport Watersiders’ Union who recently was appointed to the executive of the New Zealand Watersiders’ Union, proceeded to Wellington today. Mrs J. Phibbs and Mrs Walker arrived from Greymouth yesterday on a visit to Mr and Mrs H. Casey. Messrs Petrie and Ogilvie, of Foxton, spent the week-end in Westport, leaving yesterday for Karamea. Mr and Mrs J.J C. Main, of Karamea, were visitors to Westport yesterday. Dr. B. Rutherford, Millerton, arrived in Karamea on Sunday. He will take the place of Dr. Anna Lewin.

Mr M. B. Scully returned yesterday from attending the meeting of the N.Z. Acclimatisation Societies, at Christchurch.

> Miss Gilbert, Wellington, formerly on the Westport Technical High School staff, arrived yesterday on a visit to Mr and Mrs G. Neill. Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, paid a visit of inspection to the Westport branch yesterday morning, and left by car for Greymouth yesterday afternoon.

Messrs F. E. Stent A. Prescott, D. Simms, W. H. Haybittie, A. J.J Smith, J. R. C. Critchley, S. Worgan, T. Durkin, W. Pascoe, W. J. Preston, members of the Buffalo Lodge, Greymouth, were visitors to Westport during the week-end. Buller Branch Labour Party:

At the monthly meeting of the Westport branch of the New Zealand Labour Party held last evening, the following officers were nominated for positions on the national body: President, Mr J. Roberts; vice-president, Mr J'. Thorn; secretary, Mr Moohan. It was agreed to re-nominate the present executive area officer, Mr McKane. Nominations were also forwarded to the L.R.C. for the forthcoming local body elections.

High Commissioner’s Visit: Sir Harry Batterbee (High Commissioner for Great Britain in New Zealand) and Lady Batterbee arrived from Greymouth at 1 p.m. on Monday and were met on arrival by the Mayor and Mayoress, Messrs D. J. Archer (chairman of the Buller County Council), J. C. Brown (president of the Buller Progress League), .A. Taylor (Town Clerk) and C. H. 'Thomas (Deputy-Mayor), and other prominent citizens. During the afternoon he visited the State, Convent, and Technical Schools, where he addressed the pupils on phases of the war. He paid a tribute to the people of Great Britain for their courage in the /ace cf persistent Nazi attacks. He said that Hitler would not win the war, because the people of the Empire were determined that he would not. The children at the State School sang at the end of Sir Harry’s address “There’ll Always Be An England.” Later, accompanied by members of Buller local bodies, Sir Harry Batterbee left on a visit to Denniston. Lady Batterbee, who rested during the afternoon, did not make the trip. During the evening. Sir Harry Batterbee was met at the County Chambers by a large and representative gathering of Buller citizens. Before the meeting began, Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee were introduced by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Robertson) to all those who attended. Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee mingled freely with those present, and all were impressed by their pleasing personality. 'After Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee had been welcomed by the Mayor, the County Chairman, Mr D. J. Archer, welcomed them on behalf of the citizens of the County. Sir Harry Eatterbee delivered an interesting address on matters relating to the Empire’s part in carrying on the war, and on New Zealand’s contribution to the ultimate victory. In thanking Sir Harry for his interesting and lucid address, the Mayor referred to the work being done by the Buller district with regard to the war effort. Customs Returns: The Customs returns for the Port of Westport for November, with the figures for the corresponding month last year in parentheses, are as follows: Customs £770 4s 8d (£498 2s Id); beer tax £640 15s 4d (£623 2s Sd); sales tax £548 Ils (£6OO 6s 3d); gold nil (£l3l 16s 8d); light dues £l6 4s 4d (£53 15s 8d); war expenses—siales tax £491 16s 8d (nil), .other £212 13s Id (£376 3s sd). Vital Statistics: Following are vital statistics for Westport for November, with the figures for the same month last year in parentheses: Births 8 (11); marriages 3 (4); deaths 13 (3). Amateur Athletic Club: At the annual meeting of the above club, held in the premises of Mr D. J'ohnson, Mr J. McEnaney presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted. Election of officers resulted: President, Mr J. McEnaney; vice-presidents, as formerly, with some additions, including J. M. Robertson and W. A. Craddock; Messrs D. Johnson and M. Head were elected as active vice-presidents; management committee, Capt. Parkes, J. Connelly, F. Foote; club captain, Mr L. Eddy; secretary-treasurer, Mr C. Douthett; handicappers, Messrs A.

Pain, S. and D. J'ohnson. It was decided to hold the opening day on December 10. All were enthusiastic and confident that with some interest taken in the younger athletes and cyclists, the season would prove a most successful one.
