INVASION PLAN
BRITAIN READY To Prevent Bisection lAus & N.Z. Cable Assn.] LONDON, August 4. A correspondent, who was permitted to visit the headquarters of the Northern Command, writes: “Here the Army and the Home Guard stand ready for the invader. They recognise that his plan may be to cut England in half at the narrowest | part, as was Russia’s idea in Fin-, land.” I It is officially stated that enemy, planes at night are reported to have dropped more leaflets containing Hitler’s speech, in a few districts in Wales and south-east England. WAR SACRIFICES IN BRITAIN LONDON, August 4. ' On Wednesday, Mr Arthur Greenwood, Minister without portfolio and Chairman of the Committee of the War Cabinet which directs the economic policy, will make a statement, ; which will be followed by a debate, on the Government war-time eco-. nomic policy. Many Members ’expect that' Mr | Greenwood will give some indication of the Government’s policy to carry: the reduction of civilian consumption of goods even further than was contemplated by the imposition of the Purchase Tax, and at the same time explain the Government’s attitude to war-time relation of wages to the cost of living. On Tuesday, the second reading of the Finance Bill will give the Chancellor of the Exchequer an opportunity of replying to criticisms voiced generally in the press, that the “interim” budget is inadequate to meet the needs he himself summed up in his introductory speech, and that much more drastic financial measures may be deemed necessary to find the money needed for the successful prosecution of the war.
