N.Z. COAST WAR RISK

BONUSES AWARDED For Seamen, Cooks and Stewards [Per Press Association] AUCKLAND, August 2. War risk bonuses, effective as from last Thursday, have been awarded to the seamen, th e cooks and the stewards employed in the coastal shipping trade of New Zealand, according to an announcement made by Mr J. A. Gilmour, Industrial Magistrate. Mr Gilmour presided over a conference of representatives of the shipping companies and of the unions, which was held in camera on Friday last, July 26, in Wellington, by direction of the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser.

The ratings in the coastal service will receive a monthly bonus of £1 lbs. and the boys and cadet stewards will receive a monthly bonus of £l. No bonus has been awarded for the men who are employed within river limits.

Bonuses, however, of 17s 6d per ‘menth for ratings, and 10s per month for boys and cadet stewards working within extended river limits have i been allowed. In view of the fact that bonuses had been awarded to the workers of coastal vessels, and that allowances had been made for New Zealand seamen on over Seas vessels, Mr Gilmour said. Workers were entitled to some increase. Because of the financial position of the companies, he would not make payment retrospective.

“Although it may not be in my province to comment, in these proceedings on, the question of freight charges, I feel bound to say that I was impressed by statements, from both sides, as to the precarious financial position of the companies concerned, and it does appear that sympathetic consideration might well" be given any application made by the companies for permission to increase their freight charges in order to meet the additional wage costs imposed by tins decision,” said Mr Gilmour. N.Z. HOME DEFENCE Territorials Called Up THIRD PROCLAMATION. WELLINGTON, August 2. A. further proclamation, calling out officers, non-commissioned officers, and other ranks for military service for home defence, in accordance with a scheme of Territorial training, was issued this evening. This is the third of the prock/nations. The other two have been gazetted some time ago. The first one called out officers and non-commis-sioned officers of the Fortress Battalions, and the second the same ranks of various other units, and men to the Fortress Battalions. The present proclamation provides for the calling up of all ranks of the remaining unit s at various dates between now and February next.
