A meeting of the Westport section of the New Zealand Workers’ Union was held during the week-end. Mr. R. McGregor presiding. In opening th e meeting the chairman commented on the apathy of the members in not taking a greater interest in union affairs. He stated there were several matters of vital importance that should be discussed appertaining to theii* wages and working conditions, and it was only by attending union meetings and taxing a keenci interest that these matters could be rectified. It was a duty every member owed to himself and his family to see that his wages were in accordance with the increased cost of essential commodities. It was wrong to stay away from meetings and allow two or three to run things their own way, and he trusted he would see a larger attendance next meeting. Several matters of importanc: were dealt with through the correspondence, the 4B scheme receiving, some severe criticism. Membersprotested vigorously against the conditions governing this scheme. After a lengthy discussion it was decided to request head office to communicate with the Department on the question of securing better conditions for the men employed on this scheme. A circular was received from head office requesting every member to subscribe one day’s pay towards the Patriotic Funds. The question was thoroughly discussed by the members present, who finally decided to take no action. The district organiser, who was present, reported on a conference held in Wellington. After several questions had been asked and answered, it was moved that the report be received and a vote of thanks be accorded to the delegate.
