The death occurred suddenly on Sunday, of Mr Alick Manderson, of Kilbirnie, Wellington. Deceased who was born 71 years ago at Ayrshire, Scotland, is survived by two sons and one daughter, all of Wellington. Mrs Hazeldine, of Dobson; is a sister-in-law of deceased. The“re are also two brothers, James, in Sydney, and Archie, Dunedin.

The death occurred on Saturday after a brief illness of Mr Edmund Jones, of Harbour View' Road, Northland, Wellington, one ;of the best known residents of the ‘ district, and one who, nearly seventy years ago, as a newspaper proprietor, was actively associated with the> progress of the West Coast when the ‘gold-mining industry here was at the\ height of its prosperity. Mr Jones, who would have been 97 next December, was born in Birmingham. • In the early seventies Mr Jones decided to go to Hokitika, and there he and his father became proprietors of the “Evening Star,” which they ed for several years. Right up to the last Mr Jones had vivid recollections of the great days on the West Coast and he often recounted stories of events he had witnessed, many of them both amusing and exciting. Towards the end of the seventies Mr Jones left the West Coast forf’Wellington. ’ He arrived there sixty-three years ago, and for a time worked on the “Independent,” the predecessor of the old “New Zealand Times.” From the “Independent” he joined the staff of the Government Printing Office, where he remained until his retirement on superannuation some thirtytwo years ago. He was a life member of the Typographical Society.
