Mr J. White arrived yesterday from Christchurch.
Mr. W. Brown returned by yesterday’s express from Christchurch.
Private D. Strachan left yesterday on return to Burnham.
Mr. and Mrs. John McNeill, Bright Street, Cobden, left by yesterday’s express for Christchurch, where they will take up residence.
Mr. R Brown arrived yesterday from Hornby on a visit to his parents. Mr., and Mrs. H, Brown, Murray Street.
The engagement is announced of Mavis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Mann, Dunollie, to Albert, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Stebbings, Hikimutu. Taumarunui.
The engagement is announced of Norma, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Lamont, Greymouth, to lan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Baird, Napier.
Mr Rupert Harvey, Trinity College Examiner of elocution, London, will arrive in Greymouth on Thursday next to conduct the examination; in this centre.

Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included: Mr O. McGuigan, Mr K. E. Balchin, Mr M. B. Scully (to Christchurch), Mr J. Hardie (to Burnham), Mr and Mrs H. McCorkindale (to Invercargill).
On the occasion of his 75th birthday yesterday, Mr W. Meldrum, President of the Greymouth Golf Club, was met by members of the club at the Kaiata links. He was made the recipient of a suitable present on behalf of the club by the club captain, Mr Boustridge.
Mr R. E. Nelson, of the Greymouth P. and T. staff, has received notice of his appointment as a wireless operator in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He will leave for the Harewood Airport, Christchurch, in the middle of September.
Mr Anderson Tyrer, Trinity College Music Examiner London, arrives in Greymouth on Thursday, August 7, from Hokitika to conduct the instrumental and vocal examination of local pupils. On the following Tuesday he leaves for Westport to conduct examinations there. Mr Tyrer was the conductor of the recent Centennial Orchestra which won such acclaim in the four main musical centres of New Zealand. His wife, Mrs Nanette Tyrer is a talented violinist, and is at present giving recitals from the principal radio tions throughout New Zealand.
The Rev. Richard Hill J’ohnson,. vicar of Takapuna, died suddenly onj Sunday afternoon. While resting at j his vicarage, after taking church I services, he suffered a heart attack. ’ Mr Johnson had lately been indis- l posed, and had returned about a ■ week ago, after recuperating at Rotorua. He appeared to be in his usual health, and in the morning conducted two services in St. Peter’s Church, Takapuna, and one at Campbell’s Bay. His brother, Rev. Harry Johnson, of Auckland, was assisting him by taking some of the day’s duty, but he had intended to conduct the evening service at Takapuna.
