DISMISSAL DEMANDED
SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITY By State Employees [Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 17. A resolution urging the Government to dismiss any servants whose “go-slow” policy or whose Communist or subversive tactics were against the country’s war effort, was carried, unanimously, at the annual meeting of the Territorial Association of Otago to-day. The meeting was assured by the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones), who was present, that the Government was not going to allow anyone to sabotage the war effort, but, at the same time, he said that the Allies were fighting for freedom, and the right of people to express their opinions. He said they must respect those opinions, provided that they did not act detrimentally to the Dominion’s war effort. The resolution was as follows:— “That this annual meeting of the Territorial Association of Otago requests the Government to take immediate action to dispense with the services of any persons employed in Government Departments who, through “go slow” tactics, Communistic or subversive activities, are detrimentally affecting New Zealand’s production, and consequently her war effort.” Pacifist Teacher EDUCATION BOARD. TAKES NO ACTION. WELLINGTON, April 17.I 7 . An advertisement which appeared in the Wellington evening paper, the “Post.” on April 9th. calling a public meeting under the combined auspices of the Christian Pacifists’ Society and the Peace Pledge Union, hd to a long discussion by the Wellington Education Board, because the advertisement named a teacher as the chairman of the meeting. A resolution moved asking that, the Board give consideration to the ttcachcr’s action, and get the views of the Education Department, but . the resolution was defeated, a majority of the members agreeing that the matter did not come within the jurisdiction of the Board. Colonel McDonald, who moved the motion, said that when the Board saw this advertisement that one ot their teachers was to take the chair at a pacifist meeting, it should realign the effect' that this man had on the children.
