RUGBY FOOTBALL

West Coast Union MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING Mr A. A. Adams was in the chair at the weekly meeting of the Management. Committee of the West Coast Rugby Union last evening. There were also present Messrs A. M. Jamieson, H. S. Silcock, M. Olseh, t. Mclntosh, F. Eggletoh, J. Steel, T. P. Ryan, J. Guy, F. W. Baillie, J Kyle, T. O’Donnell, and O. MoLeafi (secretary). A donation of £1 from Mr E. J. Rundle was acknowledged with thanks. The New Zealand Rugby Union forwarded £5 Subsidy on the cost of transport of school teams for the Seddbn Shield’s district tournament. Mr Guy said that the Union should have a statemeht on the tourney Mr Mclntosh said that it was hopeless to write, as the Buller Union never answered their letters. It was decided to request the Buller Union to forward a statement. Regarding a proposed amendment to Rule 22, the chairman explained that it was designed to permit tlie immediate past-president to remain on. the New Zealand Council.

Applications from the Taylorville and Otira schools for school footballs were referred to the schools’ representatives tor a recommendation.

The application of the Kumara Club for the reclassifications of J. Sinclair and C. Wright from senior to junior was approved. Three applications for reinstatement were received and recommended to the New Zealand Council for favourable consideration. The New Zealand Union advised that during the war period members of all forces could play Rugby football for their regimental units whether players of other codes played or not. without endangering their amateur status. Similarly civilian chibs could play regimental units containing players of other codes. The New Zealand Union wrote to the effect that the Transport Department had been approached with a view to a relaxation of the petrol restrictions for travelling teams. The Department was willing to assist, and the Minister would give favourable consideration to any reasonable proposals put before him if the applications were aproved by unions and endorsed by the New Zealand Union For this purpose, returns of all grounds, sub-union districts, cost of conveyance, and all other details were required. It was decided to request all clubs to return last season’s trophies to the secretary.

TEAMS NOMINATED The following nominations of teams were received:— Senior: Cobden (2), Blaketown, United, Celtic, Star. Junior: Kumara, Te Kinga, Magpies, Celtic,. United, Star. Third. Grade: Cobden, Magpies, Celtic,. United, Star, Technical. Fourth Grade: Blaketown, Technical (2). Mr Ryan said he would like to see Cobden put in a fourth grade teajn. Mr Baillie said that Cobden haT five or six seniors over last year, and the juniors then had no chance of promotion. The chairman said that the fourth grade entries were the Worst feature. Young players should be encouraged. Mr Steel said there could be no objection to Cobden entering two senior teams. Mr Ryan: Two is all right, but I would like to see a junior team. Mr Baillie said the club had to consider its players. Mr Steel: Every time. The nominations were accepted. The following committees were elected:— Fixtures: Messrs Jamieson, Balllie and Silcock. Postponements: Messrs Ryan, Eggleton and Baillie. It was resolved that postponements be decided at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Messrs Ryan, Jamieson; Steel, Williams and Mclntosh were re-elected to the insurance committee. LENGTH OF COMPETITION Mr Ryan said that last year they! had discussed the number. of rounds, to be played at length. He thought j the filial arrangement was satisfactory. Mr Steel: We didn’t play twe rounds last year. There was something wrong with the draw, as the competition petered out before the best teams had met. MrJamieson said theft Cobden were so far ahead that the competition had to close earlier than usual. Mr O’Donnell: Hokitika were in then, but they won’t be this year. Mr Mclntosh favoured holding a second competition as last year. j Thb chairman pointed out that one round Would take live Weeks. Mr Steel said that last year the premier team was playing what were practically junior teams. That gave them a big lead, and it was unfair for them to play Blaketown twice. Mr Jamieson said only two second round games were played, and the draw was then made out of a hat. That could not be called unfair. Mr Mclntosh moved and Mr Ryan seconded that the senior ■ competition be of two rounds. The chairman said that if there was an absolute runaway, the Union could close the competition earlier. The motion was carried. It was also, decided that the junior competition be of two rounds, and the third grade three rounds. The fourth grdde was held over, ail clubs to be asked to form fourth grade ' (cams. Mr Baillie said he would like to ! see one senior game started at 1.30 i p.m. ’ Mr Ryan and Mr Mclntosh supported the proposal, the former saying that it was done in all other ; centres. It was decided to fix the times for ! games at 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. i Mr Mclntosh said Liat the referees I would inspect boot studs at all games I cn Saturday next. I It was decided that Messrs T.
