Mr. I. Baird, of the staff of Station 2YH, Napier, is on a holiday visit to Greymouth.

A Hollywood cable says that on Monday Gracie Fields and Monty Banks were married- quietly at the home of the bride’s parents. Mr C. H. Schwass, Divisional Executive Officer of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, has been appointed assistant to the Director of the Fields Division.—Press Assn.

The death has occurred of Mr. A. S. Houston, of Wellington, who was Secretary of the Department «f Agriculture and who served 37 years in various Government Departments, and the Public Service Association. He was a member of the Public Service Appeal Board, and he also saw service in the South African war. He leaves a widow, but no family.

Misses Madge Hewison, Doreen Donovan and Phyllis Bayley, whose marriages take place at Easter, were tendered a social evening by the sthff of Woolworth’s Ltd., Greymouth. Presentations of fire screens and pyrex bowls to each were made by the manager, Mr L. Lake, who referred in eulogistic terms to their work whilst members of the staff, extending to them good wishes for their future happiness.

Mr. A. N. Grigg, M.P., for MidCanterbury, who enlisted at the beginning of last month, has been called up for service with the Third Echelon. He has been posted as a Staff Captain at the headquarters of the New Zealand divisional artillery. He will go into camp at Papakura on April 5. Mr. Grigg served with distinction in the Royal Field Artillery in the Great War, gaining the rank of Captain, and winning the Military Cross.

Mr. F. Johnston, who is a member of the Second Echelon, was given a presentation on Monday evening by the members of the Marist Old Boys’ Rugby League football team. Mr. J. Griffen (President of the Club), made the presentation and. also wished Mr. Johnston the best of health and luck, and a safe return. Other members to speak were Messrs P. Sweetman and M. Hopkins. Messrs W. Moore and B. Rathbun, on behalf of the West Coast Rugby League, wished Mr. Johnson a go'od trip and a safe return.
