AUSTRALIAN STRIKES
COAL SHORTAGE Bfew Strike Threatened [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received March 2, 11.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 18. The Australian coal strike is, so far. not causing much inconvenience, as most of the shipping companies and the gasworks have fairly large reserves. But every means is being taken to economise the coal. In Victoria some of the country railway services have been curtailed in order to conserve supplies. PORT KEMBLA STEEL WORKERS (Aust N.Z. Cable Assn. T (Received March 18, 11.10 p.m.) • SYDNEY, March 18. A message from Woolongong states that a general strike at the Port Kembla Steel Works is threatened by the night shiftworkers, as the result of the management’s refusal to discuss claims made for a forty-hour week, a twenty per cent wages increase, and also double time for Sunday work. The strike policy has yet to be endorsed by the dayshift workers.
