IOi)r Own Correspondent]. REEFTON, March 13. Mr L. McKane, employed by the Forestry Department at the Globe, sustained a serious accident yesterday. He was using an axe when he slipped and the axe went into his right foot, cutting it badly. He was brought into Reefton, where he was attended by Dr. Brockenshire. Dr. J L. Wicken, Medical Superintendent of Reefton Hospital, who has been spending his annual leave in the South, returned to Reefton last evening. The annual meeting of the Inanga-hua-Murchison branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held at Reefton. There was a fair attendance. Mr. R. A. Dickie presided. The Treasurer, Mr.. F. Llewellyn, presented the balance-sheet, showing a satisfactory credit balance. The following officers were elected for the year:—President, Mr. R. A. Dickie (Reefton); vice-presidents, Mr. G. Mitchell (Junction), Mr. R. W. Moir (Murchison); secretary-treas-urer, Mr. A. F. Ellis (Reefton); executive committee: Miss Bell. Miss French, Miss Henry, Mr. Llewellyn, Mr. H. Cullen, Mr. J. Moyle; auditor, Mr. H. C. Cullen; trustee, Mr. A. F. Ellis; delegate to annual meeting, Mr. Ellis. Murchison members reported that an endeavour was being made to establish a Murchison sub-branch, and, it was decided that a deputation visit' Murchison and attend a meeting, with a view to assisting in the formation of a sub-branch. The President advised that the Director of Physical Education from Wellington would be shortly visiting the district, and itj ,was decided to arrange a teachers’ refresher course.
The monthly meeting of the Council of Reefton School of Mines was held on Tuesday night, Mr. R. ADickie being voted to the chair. Apologies for absence were received from several members. Mr. E. T. Baird, newly-appointed secretary, was welcomed by the chairman. Mr. J. _K. Patterson, a new Council member, was also welcomed. Mr. J. Patterson moved and Mr. Wright seconded that the Mines Department be asked to forward the transit theodolite promised to the school. —Carried. The director reported: For January no classes were held, and in that month from January 11 to the 31st, 21 assays were carried out, quartz samples 16, bullion assay 1, coal dust 4. For February 31 samples were tested, 21 quartz, 5 alluvial, 2 bullion assays, 1 scheelite assay, a slight improvement on the final months of 1939 Classes for the year have commenced at Reefton, Waiuta, Wallsend and Blackball, the total number of students being practically the same as last year. The School, of Mines examination for 1939 results are now to hand, and ths following were the passes: 2nd class pass, ventilation, Messrs B. Alborn, F. Rollerson (Reefton); 3»d class
pass: Mr. W. Burnett,Jnr. (Reefton). Mining, first class pass: Messrs J. Etheridge and R. Alborn (Reefton). Winding pumping haul’ng, 2nd class pass: Messrs J. Etheridge and R. Alborn (Reefton). Surveying, Mr. JBaird (Wallsend), Ist class pass. Mr. J. Morris, the scholarship candidate, obtained the following marks, winding pumping, etc., 61; elementary mechanics 64, metallurgy of gold ond silver 60, machine drawing 36. Mr. Morris was unfortunate in not obtaining 60 per cent in the latter subject, which would have entitled him to a section of four subjects. The director’s report was adopted. In reply to a question by the chairman the director advised that 75 per cent of pupils who sat for examination had obtained passes. The president,, secretary and treasurer were authorised to sign cheques. Accounts for £74/9/were passed for payment.
