ACCIDENTS

SHUNTER’S DEATH. [Per Press Association]. ‘ WELLINGTON, March 13. An inquest was opened to-day regarding the death of Wilson, shunter and porter, who was killed at Johnsonville on March 6. George Reid, engine driver, said that * after he got a signal' from deceased, stepped backwards, between a wagon and the leading truck, to unfasten the coupling hock, and disappeared from witnesses’s sight. This was unusual, as the shunter usually stepped back. Witness assumed that something was wrong, and applied the brakes to bring the engine and trucks to a stop. He found deceased pinned under the leading back wheel of the wagon attached to the engine. A doctor and ambulance were immediately summoned. Witness got quite a good view from the electric engine, and the brakes were in firstclass condition.
