OTAGO’S WIN

Plunket Shield OTAGO DEFEATS WELLINGTON. DUNEDIN, February 13. Only half an hour’s play this .morning was sufficient to conclude the final Plunket Shield match of the season between Otago and Wellington,. Otago winning by 58 runs in a game in which its position at' one stage of its second innings appeared hopeless. Wellington’s innings ended for 211 runs, and a feature of the limited play this morning was a sparkling effort by Whyte, who did not seem in the least perturbed by Wellington’s dim hope of making the 95 more runs necessary for a win. Whyte (14). and Tindill (6) continued Wellington’s innings of 175 for eight. Tindill’s back was still troubling him, and Airey ran for him. This batsman was content to merely let the ball hit the bat, but Whyte was looking for safe runs, and, after lifting Moloney to long off for two, he reached 20 with a neat three to fine leg off Elmes. Later he swept Moloney to the leg? boundary. Now Whyte was opening out, and playing leader. He hit three fours in an 'over to bring the total to 200. Wellington, at this stage, needed 70 runs to win. The visitors’ chances of winning suddenly vanished, Lemin taking the last two wickets in an over. He ended Whyte’s aggressive innings with a lovely ball, and two balls later he had Ashenden, the last man, neatly caught in the slips. Otago had dost possession of the wooden spoon after holding it for two years. OTAGO—First Innings 138 OTAGO—Second Innings 351 WELLINGTON—First Innings . 220 WELLINGTON—Second Innings. E. J.
