HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 13. The Kokatahi-Koiterangi Band will' visit the Exhibition shortly, leaving here on April 20 and returning a week later. The Coroner, Mr A. E. Benjamin, held an inquest at Hoklt ka Menial Hospital yesterdav on a patient who had died the previous day. After hearing evidence by Dr. Childs and Nurses Curtain. Horton and Chandler, a verdict was returned that death was caused by shock following burns on the" abdomen, buttocks and back. It was shown that deceased left her. bed and went to the scullery sink f i ' a drink. She was there seen by a' passing nurse wno ordered her back, to bed. Two or three minutes later I a scream was heard, and the nurse, found the patient’s nightdress on fire. | The only -place where there was a fire was in a combination stove, used to supply hot water and heating,, and it is surmised she must have stooped to pick up something off the floor, and that the back of the garment caught i ifire.

The death occurred yesterday at th" s Westland Hospital of Mr William Dick, an old and respected resident of Three Mile. Deceased, who was a native of Three Mile, and 65 years of age, had onlv a brief illness. He had for very many years been 1 engaged at the old Three Mile sawmill. Predeceased by his wife, he leaves a grown up family of four sons and four daughters, all of whom are wellknown in the district, and to whom goes the sympathy of a- wide circle of friends.

The death of' Mr George Shadbolt, a well-known and h'ghly esteemed resident of the district, occurred yesterday. A native of Akaroa, he 60 years of age, and had a long association with the sawmilling industry, and latterly worked for six years on the R ; mu Flat dredge. For about thirty years he was employed at Ruatapu with the firm of Butler Bros. Besides his wife he leaves a family of four—one son. John, and three daughters. Mesdames Olsen (Rimu), Sutherland (Christchurch) and Clifton (Hokitika). He is survived also by a brother (Mr Wm. Shadbolt, Christchurch) and a sister (Mrs Russel, Upper Hutt). He was an old member of the Druids’ Lodge. Residents are looking forward to the ftaging next Tuesday at the Princess Theatre, of "The Springtime Revue,” by a clever company of Greymoulh amateurs, in aid of the local Patriotic Society. It has proved a decided “hit” in Greymouth. The Women’s Institute on Wednesday of next week is holding an ent rta nment, including games, sales of g.fts, and competitions, in aid of the swimmng baths construction fund.
