(Our Own Correspondent], HOKITIKA. February 12. The m.v. Gael left for Bruce Bay on Saturday and sailed from Bruce Bay with timber for Wellington yes-| terday. She sans from \yelhngton for Hok.tTk’a’ on Wednesday. Rain delay-j ed the m.v. Hokitika’s departure from, Wellington. and she was to leave to-’ day for Greymouth. She sails from Hokitika on return to Wellington on Thursday. j Owing to the inclement weather the St. Mary’s Flower Snow, arrang | ed for Wednesday next, has been postponed, and so as not to clash with the I Women’s Institute garden party on the follow.ng Wednesday, the show will now be held on Thursday, Feoru-' ary 22. | Last week 5.8-1 inches of rain fell here, and there were 22 j hours of. sunshine. On Sunday a busy day was spent by ten members of the Westland Branch of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, at Lake Kanieri, in clearing the entrance to the Mt. Tuhua track. Two sign-boards supplied bv the Lake Kanieri Scenic Board, were erected, one at the road side and the other at the point where the path enters the bush. An hour or so was spent in cutting a new track near the road at,

Caldwell, producer of the Railways Swingtime Revue of a performance at Hokitika for patriotic purposes, provided travelling expenses of the party would be met. It was resolved to accept the offer, : and the Princess Theatre is to he re- [ served for the 20th inst. It was resolved that advertising be left to the secretary, who Was authorised to expend up to £lO for this purpose. Mrs G. A. Perry was empowered to appoint a sewing committee of members of the Church Guilds, Unions, Women’s Institute, Croquet Club, Golf Club, Tennis Clubs, Nurses’ Associations. and Misses Macfarlarie, M, Prendergast and ; M. Wood. It was reported that the following organisations had agreed to assist in general work, nominating the representatives mentioned: Fire Brigade, Aero Chib, Croquet Club (Mrs R. Hokitika Festival Centennial Week, starting in a fortnight’s time, is to be devoted to raising funds for the Centennial Swimming Baths, on which an expenditure of 1400 is proposed to fit them in modern stye, and provide a new public entrance. Races open the festival, and the highlight should be a schools display on Cass Square in the' midweek, when a public gathering will be addressed by the Mayor and others. "The winding-up event will be a sports programme, with a chop and other features. The chief item of interest of the week preceding Centennial Week will be the judging for the Turner Cup competition. This cup was donated to the Beautifying Association, who decided that in order to improve the streets and street frontages, a competition should be held. This takes place twice yearly, in order that all garden lovers may have an equal chance of winning the coveted trophy: in October, when

spring flowers and flowering shrubs are at their best, and in February for the annual summer display. The points allotted are as follows: Outside fence. General appearance as vieXved from the middle of the road, 50; maintenance, 25; inside fence—general appearance, including lawns, flowers and paths, 25; total' 100. Over 100 homes will be judged. At the Association’s monthly meeting, a letter was received from the High School Board, confirming a . grant made for £25 towards improvements to the section next to Howat’s butchery. A plan of the suggested lay-out was presented for discussion, and it was agreed that a deputation interview representatives of the Swimming Club before any definite work was decided upon. Messrs Frederic, Green and Miss Stevenson were appointed as the deputation. Mr’H. Stapleton was appointed representative on the Patriotic Society. Mr Taylor and Miss Stevenson were again elected as judges for the Turner Cup competition. It was agreed to have a working bee on the riverside area on Monday next. Included in the Hokitika candidates who sat for the School certificate examination held in November and December last, and who gained a partial pass was James Andrew Gilchrist: A former Hokitika District High School pupil who was successful at Wellington with a complete pass was Mavis N. Delich.

Mr Jim Knowles, a pupil of the D.H.S., and son of Mr and Mrs S. Knowles of Rimu, has left for the Christchurch Training College. Misses L. M. Park, S. Dalziel, J. Armstrong and A. Ashley, and Messrs W. S. Dove, J. Knowles and J. Veale have also gone to study at the College.
