Mrs E. Seguin left yesterday, on a visit to Christchurch. Mr S. P. Todd, Hokitika will leave on Tuesday next for Dunedin where he will in future reside. Chief Petty Officer N. A. Jackson, and able seaman J’. .Thompson, who have been visiting Greymouth, left last evening on return to Christchurch. Rev. Rather T. M . O’Connor, C.SS.R., who has been conducting retreats for the Sisters of Mercy at Hokitika and Greymouth, left .on return to Wellington yesterday. A cablegram from New York announced that Mr James Roosevelt, the President’s eldest son, has joined United Artists, as an independent producer at cinemas. Mr Alf Dickson, who was in charge of the sporting columns of the “Canterbury Times,” “Lyttelton Times”, “Star,” and. “Star-Sun” for over 43 years has retired from the staff of the last-named journal. He was presented with a cheque for six months’ salary by his employers. Mr A. E. Tabb; who has retired from the staff of Duncan McLea'i, Ltd., after over 25 years’ service, was met by the staff and presented with a,- travelling . bag and fountain ;pen. The presentation was made by Mr P J'. -McLean who, on behalf of those present, wished Mr Tabb health and happiness in his retirement.
A. London cable states that Lord Willingdori has denied rumours that he is succeeding Lord Gowrie as Gov-ernor-General of Australia. “I am too old to take up a job of that nature,” he said, “but I have arranged to make a short stay in Australia, when I go to New Zealand.” Lord Willingdori will carry a bundle of letters 18 inches high, as a resut of his offer to the New Zealand battery to act as postman. ■ ,
