GREYMOUTH T.C.

HANDICAP TO PURINA Double to George Arliss PALOMAR AND AXSPEAR SCORE. The Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting opened in fine, sunny weather and before a large ance at Victoria Park yesterday, UK track was in fast order and required watering throughout the afternoon w prevent the dust rising. Despite the farge fields, big totalisator turnover, delays through a smash, and m the S&Sing o 8! the fields, the meetmg finished fairly well up to tune, re iiectine much credit on the officials of the Club, headed by the Fresiaem, Mr. P. C. Heaphy and the Secretary, Mr.* W. E. Pring; and the totalisator

staff, who worked at express speed to cope w.th the demands of the public. under most limited facilities, and u was not their fault, but the fault of investors coming with a late rush inrecord their choice that many were shut out on several races. Aneffo was made to adhere to the closi s lg time as near as possible, and « practice will be £ollo * ed day. The totalisator handled £13,34 < > as against £14,406 on the first day last year, representing a decrease 11059. in 1938 figures were £10,947 and in 1937 £9,745 a . Without exception large fields p aded and there was fast and mte esting racing, with only one major smash, which robbed the contest fo the Intermediate Handicap of ad m terest, although the both way iavoui ite, fragment, recorded a hollow v-c torv. Of the fifteen contestants, only live completed the course. Fast time were the order of the day, and in the chief event, the winner Purina, who led all the way recorded 3.29 for uk 12J furlong journey, which 18 equivalent to round about 3.20 for the nuu and a-half. Purina stayed on wen u beat Kurea, and the favourite Purveyor in a good finish. The w nni. paid close on a score on the win mt. chine. She is a six-year-old daugi; ter of Grattan Loyal from Oxfoi.. Queen, a well-performed mare of a few years ago, who won several races on Victoria Park. A noteworthy feature of the day’s racing was the, duiu success of the veteran trotter George Arliss, who followed up his two wins at the Reef ton meeting by trotting faultlessly throughout both events. 1.1 the first trot he raced away to a b. o lead and in the second outing tocx charge after half a mile and won ieasily. In this event he was not as smart to begin and at one stage wui standing the leader up 48 yards. George Arliss has done little or no trotting in the past five years, during which time he has acted as a uLii.., horse on the Rakaia farm of 5 owner, and prior to racing at Reelton, had been harnessed up for trotting exercises on only about half a dozen occasions. George Arliss and his veteran driver, W. Shellock t received great ovations on each occasion. Burt Scott had a narrow victory from Taimaiti and the favourite Giri Pat in the Guinness Handicap. Bu.t Scott paid just on double figures to win and the second horse, laiman., who was paying over three-quarter of a century to win, returned a place dividend of over a score. Another runner in this event, Flash Bye, was unsupported on the win machine. Palomar put up a wonderful performance in winning the saddle race. He appeared to have lost all chanc.s through a bad beginning, but won nicely at the -finish from Passport, who made a great beginning from the 36 yard mark, and Glenhoime. Paljmar recorded better than the equivalent of 2.16 for the mile. There was another sensational place dividend m the Electric Handicap, and had she won, the horse concerned, Kate Bingen, would have returned a dividend of over £l.OOO on the win machine, or just over half that amount to hoi single 10/- ticket supporter lor u win. Kate Bingen’s place price was in the vicinity of a score,. The winner of the event was Royal Thread, a full, brother to Fire King, winner of the principal event at the Reefton T.C. meeting and Royal Silk, Auckland Trotting Cup and New Zealand Gold Cup victor. Royal Thread won pointlessly from Clive Brook and Kate Bingen. The winner paid over double figures and like Clive Brooic, a useful, place dividend. In a great race home, Axspear beat the favourite, King’s Jubilee, in the concluding event, the Dash Handicap, with the Reef ton-owned and trained mare Janet Gaynor in third berth. ,In the intermediate Handicap Waikari- Chief (third), paid just on double figures for a place.. Although only two actual favourites scored, the public was seldom far wide of the mark in their sorting up of the big fields, as three second favourites won and the favourites were seldom out of a place. With such big fields it would not have been surprising to have witnessed a "turnup.” The successful trainers were: W. Shellock (2), M. J. McTeigue, A. Butterfield, L. Maidens, C. K. Yeatman, O. E. Hooper and R. B. Berry. Results: —
