The Placed Horses LUCKY JACK. Lucky Jack, by Jack Potts —Tirane, owned by Mr. W. T. Lowe, won the Cup in 1937, and from 48 yards behind ran second to Morello last year. In that race, he had to thread his way through a field of eighteen, and had to swing wide leaving the straight the last time, to avoid an accident. Notwithstanding these difficulties, he covered the two miles in 4min. 16 l-ssec., and beat all but Morello. Since then his form has not been outstanding, but in finishing second to his stable mate, Parisienne, in the Metropolitan Handicap at Forbury Park he recorded 4 min. 15 4-ssec for two miles. He and Parisienne started off the same mai-K but Lucky Jack, who this time was driven by his trainer, received It yards start. Lucky Jack on his day is a pacer entitled to be ranked will the best the Dominion has known. CANTATA. Cantata, by Rey de Oro—Drumby owned by Mr. J. C. D. Simpson Westport, and trained by R. J Humphreys, was outstanding last sea son in her class, and she made th fine time of 4.16 2-5, which gave he excellent prospects. Cantata has fre quently appeared at West Coas meetings. BLAIR ATHOL. Blair Athol, by Rey de OroMolly Pointer, was second to King’ Play on the winning list last tern displaying splendid form after er tering the stable of R. J. Humphrey: who won the race twice with Harol Logan. Six starts for Humphre\ resulted in four firsts and two mir or places. Death of Well-Known Driver E. C. MCDERMOTT’S COLLAPSE. WHEN LEADING IN CUP. CHRISTCHURCH. November 7. Falling from his sulky while driving Colonel Grattan in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, at Addington, this afternoon, E. C. McDermott, the well-known trainer and driver, died shortly afterwards. It is thought that McDermott had a seizure before falling from his sulky. . Colonel Grattan was then in the lead, after a m : le and a half had been covered, and when his rider fell, the horse wont on to cross the line first. McDermott was rushed to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but nothino could be done for him. In his early fifties, the late E. C. McDermott had been interested in trottinc since his youth, and he had bred and raced many horses. Among the most successful were Capricious and Colonel Grattan. He came from the Leeston district, and he was a cattle dealer as well as a trotting trainer. He was a popular figure in the trotting world. McDermott, is survived by his wife and one son.
