' Quist defeated Riggs 6/1, 6/4,« 3/6, 3/ Bromwich defeated Parker 6/0, 6/3, 6/ After losing service in the first game, Quist played unbeatable tennis throughout the first set. Riggs □laying well, but was unable to keep pace with the Australian, who attacked masterfully from the start, and continued the blistering pace m the 1 second set. However, m the third set, I Riggs regained a measure of control, Qiust tiring. In the fourth set, 'Quist’s shots had lost their crispness. ' Sensing his opponent’s failure, the American put on pressure really attacking for the first time during the match. Quist, however, shook off his weariness, and despite Riggs " es * perate, reckless fight, toofl the final set. 1 Despite the tension hanging over the final match, since the Cup was at stake, the Bromwich-Parker contest was a dull and listless baseline duel, l with the points almost identical. The I issue was never in doubt, Bromwich I playing too steadily for the Amencan. He won the first seven games. . After a brief lapse m the second set, i when Parker broke service to lead 3/1, the Australian took the next, i eight, to lead 5/0-in the final set. I Parker saved match point three times in the final game. i Mr Ward, president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, presented the Cup to Hopman. Mr Ward said: “We put in our best team, but were beaten by a better one.” | Plopman said: “I am sorry that Australia cannot play in the United States’ National Singles, but war is more important than tennis.” e
