CARRIERS WARNED
SERVICES RUN AT A LOSS. LICENCES FOR ONE YEAR. WAIUKU, September 4. "I am only renewing for one year the licences of carriers whose balancesheets show a loss,” said Mr. E. J. Phelan, sitting as No. 1 District Licensing Authority, at Waiuku. Mr. Phelan said that during his sitting at Pukekohe yesterday and again at Waiuku to-day, the investigating officer had mentioned cases of cartage services being carried on at a less when the application for renewals came forward. The operators who conducted unpayable services tended to make it difficult for other operators to obtain rates that were payable, continued Mr. Phelan. There were cases in which he was faced with having to save the lorry owners from themselves in regard to conducting un- ! economical services. “The investigating officers are there to help car-: riers to cost their operations proper- j ly, so that they shall know from time i to time how they are doing. I want | carriers to realise that an investigat-l ing officer’s inquiry into their affairs is a friendly action, calculated to help 1 them. Those conducting unpayable services should take this warning to put their house in order.” ( One case of a mail-carrying contract that was showing a loss of about £lOO a year to the operator, was mentioned. Mr. Phelan said it behoved the department to go into the matter and increase the rate of remuneration. Otherwise, the authority would need to act. . .
