GOLDMINING

BIG RIVER. The mine report for the week enaing August 31. 1939, is as follows: — No. 5 level: —North stope: Stoping 1 stone 2ft 6in wide. The northern ex tremity is now almost reached. North Jewel: Advanced 8 feet. Total 69 feet, boulders of stone occur in the track. No. 6 level: —Level ■ advanced 8 feet. Total 50 feet. Cut leader in face, Country softer. Making preparations 7to commence rising to connect with No. 5 south winze. Winze sunk 4 feet. Total 74 feet. Stone 15in wide in bottom. Battery:—3o tons stone sent to battery. WORKSOP EXTENDED. The Worksop Extender dredge return last week was 18oz of gold from 12,000 yards of material in 130 hours. ALEXANDER MINES. The gold return for the month of August was as follows: — Battery Department: 375 tons of ore crushed for 1660 z 3dwts, of melted gold. Cyanide Department: 250 tons of sands treated for 33ozs 16dwts or bullion. Estimated Value: £1430. In Addition: 7.75 tons of concentrates were saved valued at £2BO. Note: In estimating the above values gold has been taken at 150 s per fine ounce. MATAKI JUNCTION. The Mataki Junction return, for the week ended August 31, was 64 ounces of smelted gold in 128 hours from 15,000 yards. KANIERI. For August the Kanieri dredge worked 415 hours, and treated 261,000 cubic yards of material for a return of 1,003 ounces of gold. MATAKI. AUCKLAND. September 4. The Mataki dredge return for the week ended the Ist instant was 30 ounces for 132 hours' work, and 11,900 yards of material treated. GOLD NOW £8 AN OUNCE. LONDON, September 2. Gold is quoted at £8 a fine ounce. The following is a summary of the fluctuations in the price an ounce of fine gold this year:—
