High Tides; Port of Westport: Tuesday, 5.—1.27 a.m.; 1.50 p.m. Wednesday, 6. —2.12 a.m.; 2.37 p.m. Thursday, 7.—3.05 a.m.; 3.39 p.m. Friday, 8.—4.18 a.m.; 5.08 p.m. Shipping: The Kiwitea from Auckland is in the roadstead and will enter port when conditions moderate, loading coal for Auckland. The Karetu is expected from Wellington about Friday to load coal for return to that port. The Totara is expected from Lyttelton on Thursday to load coal for Timaru. The Rata is due from Nelson tomorrow to load coal for New Plymouth and Wanganui. The Alexander is due from Nelson to-morrow to load for return to Nelson.
Personal: Mr. Justice Northcroft presided over the sitting of the Supreme Court at Westport to-day. Miss Leaver, of Nelson, is visiting Westport as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Cunniffe, Russell Street. Mr. and Mrs. Stubley left on return to Christchurch on Saturday after spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. McCrae. Miss M. Powell left for Christchurch to take up a teaching appointment. Mrs. Russell, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. C. Taylor Russell Street, left on Saturday on return to Hastings. Mr. J. M. McArthur arrived from Nelson on an extended visit to friends at Utopia Road. Misses Doris Markham and Claire Rogers, of Nelson, are visiting Westport as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cosgrove. Mr. J. Glendining, mining manager for the Westport Coal Co. t at Denniston, leaves to-day for Dunedin to finalise arrangements in connection with the supply of electric current to Westport Borough Council by the Westport Coal Co. Mrs. A. Hunter left for Auckland on Saturday to attend the conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees Association. The death occurred suddenly yesterday morning of Brian, 13 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Todd, of Mill Street. A post mortem ex- ' amination was held. The funeral of the late Thomas Young Wardrope was held at Orowaiti Cemetery yesterday afternoon before a large attendance of friends from many parts of the district. The Rev. Ross Dalby conducted the serI vice. Pall-bearers were Messrs R. | Curragh, J. Wright, T. Dellow, W. Wilkie, R. Morriss and C. Cowman. Two members of the Old Boys’ Club, who have recently joined the ranks of the Benedicts, Messrs Gordon Mason and Mervyn Taylor, were on Saturday the guests of the club at a smoko in the Elite Tea Rooms. Mr. Percy Smith, President, congratulated both on the steps they had taken and on behalf of the club wished them all happiness, remarks that were endorsed by others present. To Mr. Mason the President handed an electric iron and to Mr. Taylor a handsome clock, expressing the hope that they might find good use for them. Both recipients suitably replied.
Obituary: The death occurred at the Buller Hospital on Saturday afternoon of Charles Mounter Johnston, late of Scddonville, at the age of 73 years. Mr. J’ohnston was born near Meest, Wallsend, Newcastle, New South Wales, and at the age of 29 he migrated to New Zealand, where he took up gold minnig in the Mokihinui River area, later taking up coal mining at Seddonville at the State Mine and at Stockton, where he was an underviewer. In Masonic circles, Mr. Johnston had taken an active part, being a member of the Craft for 48 years and a foundation member of Lodge Mokihinui, of which he was secretary for 18 years, as well as being W.M. for two periods. In Grand Lodge, Mr. Johnston was the Very Worshipful Past Grand Director of Ceremonies, this honour being conferred upon him by the Grand Lodge of New Zealand, in recognition of a life-time of service in the interests of the Craft. His wife predeceased him four years ago. The late Mr. Johnston leaves a family of six sons and one daughter, Mrs. J. Phibbs, of Westport; Alec, of Hastings; Charles, Kaka Point, Balclutha; Sidney and Stanley, of Hector; James, of Westport, and John, of Carterton, being the sons. Wedding: A charming wedding was celebrated at S't. Canice’s Church, Westport, at 6 p. m.on Tuesday, 22nd. August, between Gavin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Smart, Temuka, and Kathleen Thelma, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J'. McCubbin, Westport. The Rev. Father Summers officiated. The bride, who made a charming picture as Slie entered the church, escorted by her father, was wearing a lovely gown of ivory taffeta made in Victorian style. The striking feature of her frock was the quilted leg-o’-mutton sleeves and the very full skirt, which formed a slight train. Her long billowy veil of tulle was held in place bjf. a top knot of mother of pearl orange blossom. The only ornament worn was a platinum cross and she carried a sheath of arum lilies. The matron of honour was Mrs. John Blake; siste” of the bride, and the bridesmaids were Misses Pat Methven and Flora HayMacKenzie. Mr. Alan Lake, of Christchurch, carried out the duties of best man, and Messrs John Lake and Ted O’Connor acted as groomsmen. The bride’s mother received her guests wearing a smart black ensemble relieved with a sheath of fresias. The Mayor, Mr. John .Kilkenny, presided at the wedding breakfast. About 100 guests attended the reception and dance at the Elite Tea Rooms. The bride’s travelling costume was Air Force blue, with winetoned accessories.

Miniature Rifles: On Friday evening the Westport Miniature Rifle Club hold the first shoot of the sixth competition in the Army Hall. Card Tournament: There was an excellent attendance at the Labour Party’s Card tournament on Friday evening. The euchre awards went to Mr Greer, Miss Anderson and Mrs Wood. The competition was won by Mrs Douthett. A dainty supper was provided by the Ladies’ Committee.
