CONTROL OF CANCER
NEW SOUTH WALES PROPOSALS. AUCKLAND, September 1. Definite proposals for cancer control and administration in New South Wales and plans for the development of the campaign against tuberculosis will be submitted to the New South Wales Government within the next few weeks by Mr. H. Fitzsimons, Minister for Health in the State Cabinet, who passed through Auckland on his return from an extensive official visit to Great Britain, Europe, and the United States. Mr. Fitzsimons was absent from Australia when Mr. Alexander Mair was elevated to the Premiership of New South Wales by a dramatic series of events, which culminated on August 3 with the defeat of the Stevens Government. However, said Mr. Fitzsimons, he had received and accepted an invitation to retain the portfolio of health, and he would be sworn in on Monday. Accompanied by Mr. Cobden Parks, chief Government architect, who will return shortly, Mr. Fitzsimons travelled in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, France, and the United States, studying hospital developments, design, equipment and administration. His specific task vyas to look into cancer and tuberculosis control. Speaking broadly, said Mr. Fitzsimons, the general hospitals of New South Wales compared quite favourably with those he had seen abroad. Specialised hospitals, however, were not comparable with those in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and the United States. In Australia,' for instance, there was nothing like the Institute of Cancer, Paris, or the Manchester Cancer Institute.
