Caused by Poles VISTULA DYKES PIERCED. , (Received September 4, 11.50 p.m.) BERLIN, September, 4. The German Official News Agency says: The Poles have pierced the Vistula River dykes in the Tzcew region (bordering Danzig). This action has flooded the neighbouring lowlands. The Poles have also destroyed thej Vistula bridges at Tzcew and at Liessau. Review of Operations FIVE GERMAN OFFENSIVES. BUT NO RAPID PROGRESS. (Received September 5, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, September 4. Five main sectors are at present to be distinguished in the German offensive, according to “The Times” Warsaw correspondent. The objective of the German attacks on the Pomeranian front (west of Danzig) is Torun. Other attacks are being launched from a few miles east of Grudziaz, and slightly north of Chodziez. There are two drives from Zbazyn (though this is reported to have been recaptured by the Poles) and Leszno. Another offensive, from Kepno threatens Lodz. Planes from Slovakia have bombed the city of Lwow (otherwise Lemberg) in south-east Poland or Galicia. Lemberg is also known as Leopol in Galacia. Apparently both sides are feeling 1 their way. Neither is rushing to any ■ speedy decision. 1 There is no sign yet of the vaunted “Blitz Krieg” (that is “lightning war”) with the supposed intention to push forward regardless of the cost.
Polish Forces IN MORE FAVOURABLE POSITION. (Received September 5, 2.35 a.m.) PARIS, September 4. The British United Press states that French military advices have reported that the Polish military situation appears to have improved. The Poles have apparently disrupted the German offensive from East Prussia and reorganised their forces in the Corridor while reinforcements are reported to be attempting to close the break the Germans made in the Czestochova sector.
