VALEDICTORY

MRS. R. ROTHWELL. An old West Coast resident, Mrs R. Rothwell, who leaves to-day on a holiday visit to Te Kuiti, and who recently celebrated her 76th birthday, was the guest of honour at a birthday party and farewell evening at the residence of her daughter, Mrs A. Murtagh, Brick Street, on Tuesday evening. There was a large gathering of relatives and friends, who extended greetings to Mrs Rothwell and best wishes for a successful holiday . A beautiful birthday cake, adorned with 76 candles, which was made by Mrs Rothwell’s daughter, Mrs W. Swift, of Te Kuiti, was cut bv the guest of the evening. ‘Mr A. Corlett, of Te Kuiti, presided and called upon Mr Nat Rothwell to propose his mother's health, several others presqnti (supporting Ins remarks, and wishing Mrs Rothwell many more years of good health. Other toasts honoured were those of Mr Harry Swift, 89, of Greymoutth and William Tuckey, or Maori Creek, a brother of Mrs Rothwell, aged 77 years, the ages of the three old people aggregating 234 years. The host and hostess, Mr and Mrs Murtagh, and the chavrmaii were also heartily toasted, and a pleasant evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” n .
